Let me 'splain
Ive got two problems with this. One : paying $50 for white box is a bit excessive. Second : I know from experience if Im paying $50 per case, I can get great paint. Common Field Paints around here include: [*] White Box : unknown manufactuer, unknown brand - typically thick shell, thin fill, and less consistant. [**] Draxxus Rec-Sport : Procaps rec-grade paint. Thick shell, works well in rentals, few breaks in markers, marks OK. Yellow fill. Generally runs .687-.689 [**] RPS Stinger : Similar to rec-sport - a thick shell and designed for rentals and field operations. Average flight. Average marking. .687 typical. [***] Draxxus / Diablo : Blaze : A mid grade field paint, one step up from Rec-Sport - still a thick shell and designed for rentals and field operations. Average flight. Average marking. .687 typical. [****] Origin : A mid grade field paint, similar to Blaze - a medium shell - better than average flight. Average marking. .687 typical. If I have to buy any of these priced at $50/case, I can write off the expense as helping the FPO field exist - but I hope I can get away with splitting a case, or even just getting a bag. $50/case for Origin and Blaze is fine with me for FPO fields and events - but $50/case for Rec-sport and White Box is a bit much.
Locations to buy paint: Online, Dicks Sporting Goods, Sportsmans Warehouse, Wal-Mart, Ace / Tru-Value Hardware. [*] Online : It scares me to buy paint online. Ive bought too much paint that has been roughly handled and broken a few balls before it got to me. Once UPS delivers, its pretty well bought. Consequently I prefer to buy retail, but inspect the paint before buying. This rules online paint purchases out. [*] Ace/True Value : Ace/ Tru-Value occassionaly carry paint but I dont see the stores around here turning their stock. Old paint can be a bit scarey. [**] Dicks Sporting Goods : Dicks carries Zap brands, Nelson brands, Brass Eagle brands, ProCaps Recon. I dont think I've ever bought paint at Dicks. [***] Sportsman's Warehouse : under construction - I believe Sportsmans line is similar to Dicks. I know Ive seen the Nelson brands in sportsmans. Ive never bought paint at Sportsman's. [****] Wal-mart : Walmart carries the entry and mid-grades of Procaps products. When buying Wal-mart paint I walk over to the sporting goods counter, ask pemission to open the paint, and open the box at the sales counter. I remove each bacl and look at the balls for discoloration (signs of sitting too long), dimples (signs of sitting too long), and broken paint in the bottom of the bag (signs of miss handeling). If anything looks wrong, I go get another box to inspect. Using this technique ive never been disappointed with a few favorites... Procaps Visible Impact and Procaps X-ball.
